The 7 Most Common Gutter Problems in Dubuque Homes
July 22, 2026
After enough rooflines you see the same problems on repeat. Here are the seven we find most in Dubuque, roughly in the order they show up.
1. Leaking corners and seams
The most common repair call in town. Corners flex with every freeze-thaw cycle until the sealant gives, then you get the telltale drip line in the mulch. Cheap to fix when the metal is sound - a cleanout and a proper gutter-grade reseal typically lasts years.
2. Clogged downspouts
The gutter looks clear but nothing drains, and in a storm the whole run becomes a bathtub. Usually it is a plug of leaves at the top elbow or a crushed section at the ground. This is why a real cleaning always includes flushing every downspout until it runs clear at the bottom.
3. Sagging or pulled-away runs
Old spike-and-ferrule fastening backs out of the fascia a little more each winter. The run drops out of pitch, water pools, the weight pulls harder. Caught early, a re-hang with hidden hangers is a modest repair; ignored, the gutter takes the fascia board with it.
4. Lost pitch
A gutter needs roughly a quarter inch of fall per ten feet toward the downspout. Frost heave on the hangers and settling can leave a run dead level - which looks fine from the ground and holds a puddle of mosquito water all summer. The fix is re-pitching, not replacement.
5. Overflow at one corner
Almost always a roof valley concentrating water into a section the gutter was never sized for. Options run from a splash diverter to an oversized outlet and downspout at that corner. Dubuque’s summer downpours find this weak spot fast.
6. Ice damage
Winter’s signature. Ice-filled gutters weigh enough to bend brackets and rack runs out of shape, and ice dams force meltwater under shingles. Some of it repairs; badly kinked aluminum does not. Prevention is an empty gutter going into winter - see how often gutters need cleaning here.
7. Rusted-through steel
Plenty of older Dubuque homes still carry original steel gutters. When rust comes through from the inside, patching is a season-by-season game you eventually lose - that is the line where seamless replacement beats repair.
Which ones can’t wait
Pulled-away runs and active leaks over doorways, walkways, or the foundation earn a same-week fix - moving water compounds. The rest can wait for a convenient visit, but none of them improve on their own.
