How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned in Dubuque?
July 23, 2026
The short answer for Dubuque is twice a year, and never skip the fall one. The long answer depends on your trees, your roof, and which part of town you live in.
The Dubuque gutter calendar
Late spring (May into June). Maples drop their helicopters and the oaks follow with tassels and pollen strings, right as the first summer storms arrive to test your downspouts. A spring cleaning clears that drop plus whatever winter left behind - shingle grit, twigs, the tennis ball nobody remembers.
Late fall (late October into November). This is the one that matters. Dubuque’s mature maples and oaks mostly finish dropping by early November, and the gutters need to be empty before the first hard freeze - everything about the fall visit works backward from that date. A gutter full of wet leaves that freezes stays frozen, and that ice is the foundation an ice dam builds on all winter.
Who needs a third cleaning
- Homes under heavy canopy. Streets in the North End, around Jackson Park, and along the bluff tops sit under trees that predate the houses. Those gutters can refill in a month during peak drop.
- Oaks hold out longest, sometimes into December. If your November cleaning happens before the oak in the yard finishes, plan a follow-up.
- So do problem spots like roof valleys and low-pitch sections, which funnel debris into one place. If your overflow always happens at the same corner, that corner may need attention between full cleanings.
Signs you’re already overdue
Water sheeting over the edge in rain, plants sprouting from the trough, staining or drip lines on the siding, and downspouts that go quiet during a downpour - all of them mean the system is full. In winter, icicles forming along the gutter line are the same message in a colder font.
Why the fall cleaning is non-negotiable here
Dubuque winters cycle through freeze and thaw for months. Meltwater running off a warm roof into a clogged, frozen gutter has nowhere to go except up under the shingles or over the back edge against the fascia. That is how a skipped $150 cleaning turns into interior water stains and spring carpentry. Nothing guarantees an ice-free roofline, but a gutter that goes into December empty gives the dam far less to build on.
If it’s been more than a year, or you’ve never once seen the inside of your gutters, gutter cleaning in Dubuque is what we do. Firm price before the ladder comes off the truck.
