Who Installs Gutter Guards Around Dubuque?

October 19, 2026

The leaves are coming down on the older streets now, and this is the time of year a lot of Dubuque homeowners decide they are done climbing a ladder under the maples and oaks. The next question is who to call. A gutter guard is a lid on a gutter, and the lid is the easy part. What separates the people who put one on is what they do about the trough under it, on the day of the install and in the years after.

Who installs gutter guards in Dubuque?

Four kinds of installer do this work here. A gutter company fits guards as part of the same trade it cleans and repairs. A roofer can add them during a re-roof. A guard company sells its own product at an in-home appointment. And a homeowner can fit store-bought screens. Any of the four can put a guard on. For gutter guard installation in Dubuque, the useful difference is who looks after the gutter once it is covered.

None of them is wrong for every house. Where each one starts from decides what happens to a sagging run or a slow outlet that was there before the guard went on.

What does a gutter company do on a guard job that another installer may not?

It works on the gutter as well as the guard. A gutter crew fitting mesh is standing on the same trough it would otherwise come back to clean or fix, so when a run has lost its fall toward the outlet, a hanger has pulled loose or a seam is weeping, that gets handled in the same visit.

On a two-and-a-half-story house in the North End, that visit is also the one time anyone will be up at that height with the gutter open for a while. The trough gets emptied before anything goes over it, and the rest of the day is ordinary gutter repair on whatever the emptied gutter shows.

An installer who does not do gutter work may fit the guard around those problems instead. The low spot is still there afterward, under a screen.

Should the roofer put guards on during a new roof?

It can make sense. The roof edge is open while the crew rebuilds it, and some guards are made to fit at the drip edge, which is easiest to do at that stage. If your roofer offers guards as part of the job, it is a reasonable offer to hear out.

The part to settle is who answers for the gutter afterward. A roofer’s job ends at the shingle. Once the roof is done and paid for, a gutter that overflows at a corner under a new guard is a gutter problem, and the roofing company may not be the one who comes back for it. If the gutters themselves are due, the order of the two jobs matters as well, and the piece on when to replace gutters in Dubuque covers which goes first.

What is an in-home gutter guard appointment like?

It is a scheduled visit. A representative walks the house with you, presents one company’s own guard product and gives a price at the table before leaving. Some of these companies also sell their own gutters as part of the package, so the quote may include taking down what is on the house and hanging new.

The product on offer may be perfectly good. What is worth having in writing before anyone signs is a price per foot and a plain statement of what happens to the gutters already on the house, whether they stay as they are, get repaired first or come down. With both on paper, the offer can sit next to a local measured quote and be compared line for line. Our local numbers are on the page for what gutter work costs in Dubuque.

Can you put gutter guards on yourself?

On a one-story ranch, physically, yes. Snap-in screens from the store are within reach from a stepladder. Screwed-down mesh is a different job, a ladder job at the gutter lip on every foot of gutter the house has, and on a two-story that is the same ladder work as a cleaning, repeated along every side.

The bigger gap is underneath. A do-it-yourself install covers whatever the gutter already has wrong with it, the same as any installer who does not work on gutters. If staying off the ladder is the goal, our look at cleaning gutters from the ground shows how far the ground tools go.

Who takes care of gutter guards after they go up?

Someone still has to. Guards get an occasional brush-off where debris sits, a section gets lifted now and then to check the trough under it, and the downspouts still get flushed. When the company that installed the mesh also cleans gutters, that upkeep stays with the people who already know where the low stretches and the valley runs are on your house.

A guard seller that does not clean gutters hands that job back to the homeowner, or to whoever the homeowner calls next. What the upkeep involves, and how to tell a guarded gutter is due, is in our piece on whether gutter guards still need cleaning.
